Step 4: Grant Writing

Step 4 in our grant writing series focuses on developing the craft. Experienced grant writers have EXPERIENCE. They have learned some things and have practiced their proposal writing. Just getting started will start you on your way but here are some additional pointers to develop the craft.

🔹 Read articles from your industry. Pay attention to phrases and language that is used in your field. Get familiar with trends and best practice within your industry.

🔹 Grow your vocabulary. Learn to love words and explore how to use them effectively. Play word games, read blogs and journal articles.

🔹 Write a practice proposal. Pick a funder and practice writing. Apply all of the principles of writing strong proposals. Whether you send it or not, practice grant writing and get past the I've-never-done-this-before fear.

🔹 Continue learning. There are many, many opportunities to attend grant writing sessions and many books on grant writing available to be read. Even experienced writers can pick up new ideas from continuing education.

This step is one we stay planted on. Grant writers never arrive. Strong grant writers always continue to hone skills and develop the craft. Want more information? Visit THIS PAGE and explore Grant Writing Basics.
