Connection does not equal relationship.

Relationship results from cultivating connection. Connection gets you in the door but it doesn't give you carte blanche access. For example, you request to connect with Jane Doe on LinkedIn. She connects with you. You barrage her inbox with sales messages -- sometimes high pressured ones. There is no relationship and she disconnects from you. You meet John Doe at a networking event. You get a one-on-one meeting with him and monopolize the conversation with how amazing your nonprofit is and then pressure him for a donation. There is no relationship and he likely disconnects from you. Connection does not equal relationship. IF you get a foot in the door, invest the time to cultivate the relationship. Relationships can't be rushed or forced. Respect the opportunity connection provides and invest the time and energy to build a relationship.
