Dig below the surface.

I love nonprofits, community leaders and social entrepreneurs. Charitable organizations and the people who run them are, for the most part, salt of the earth. There are those, however, who prey on the goodwill of others for their own gain so let's dig below the surface....

See an 'emergency' funding request? Dig below the surface to see why the urgency. Many poorly managed organizations use this 'urgency' approach to grab a quick donation and it rarely correlates to good stewardship.

See the 'social service hero' posing with people who are struggling? Dig below the surface and check the motive. Most people who are doing good for the purpose of doing good don't need to pimp out those they are helping for the virtual applause.

Dig below the surface. Ask questions. Let's be a bit more discerning in what posts we 'applaud' or 'love.' Let's DO intentionally notice those organizations and people who are doing good without the fanfare and reward their efforts with a donation or positive word of encouragement.
