Summit of Summits
I love social entrepreneurs. They are my people. Social entrepreneurs are visionaries with the crazy notion that they might be able to use creative energy, grit and tenacity to solve a problem. These leaders are movers and shakers who aren't afraid of no and consistently and persistently tackle obstacles blocking the path.
I was recently asked what I think social entrepreneurs need. It's a great question and one worth more careful thought. Here's what immediately came to mind:
(1) Peer-to-peer support/community. Entrepreneurship can be lonely -- especially those who are tackling social issues and community needs. Social entrepreneurs need each other for support.
(2) Understanding the discipline of business. So many social entrepreneurs struggle with working ON the business and not just IN the business. Entrepreneurs don’t have a traditional work structure to force discipline. This is where I see many leaders falter. Entrepreneurs have to be diligent and intentional about setting time aside to build the business not just the product/service.
(3) Ongoing professional development. Entrepreneurs need professional development courses on accounting, budgeting, personnel, pricing, etc. Social entrepreneurs need to identify weak spots or less experienced areas of business and get trained. No one knows it all but everyone can learn. Professional development needs to be worked into the budget and the calendar.
Many social entrepreneurs have great passion but run a bit short on business acumen. Passion can be effectively used to fuel the drive to learn the business side. Social Enterprise Alliance has an upcoming summit that might be worth checking out. This may be the perfect step to find a peer group and embark on the path of professional development.
