Character wins over “get 'er done”.

As a 'doer' personality, efficiency rules. I love completing tasks quickly. It is what lights my fire. Mostly that drive serves me well in business and I'm able to move quickly to get things done for our clients and on our various projects. But character cannot be compromised over getting things done. Period. If core values don't become mandates for organizations, it is very easy for us doers to start cutting corners in the name of efficiency. Character counts.

We talk with organizations frequently about outlining #vision, #mission and #corevalues. These are the foundational elements that need to be identified, defined and need to become non-negotiables with how business is done. WHO you are as an organization, as outlined by your core values, should drive HOW you do things and this includes how we move forward personally, not just organizationally. I 'fessed up on the doer tendency, but consider these challenges for the other three core personality types:

For actors the driving force is excitement and fun. Those qualities are great if they are managed within strong core values. But choosing the exciting venture over what makes sense can lead to turbulent waters. Where do you find yourself struggling as an actor? Guard the temptation to prioritize telling the tall tale over honesty or enjoying a spotlight over humility.

For thinkers the driver is accuracy and being right. The struggle of rightness violates core values when it supersedes compassion or helpfulness or kindness or moving forward with completing a task. Thinkers can pay a high price for being right at the expense of getting work completed or keeping employees or valuing relationships with clients or colleagues.

For the friend personality, the key driver is peace. 'Peace at all cost' can compromise core values when you refuse to confront violations or hold people accountable or move a project forward. Avoiding conflict can present challenges when there is a failure to address behaviors that conflict with stated core values.

Let's be mindful that while our various personalities bring #strengths to our organization they can also produce #challenges. Stay the course and ensure your #corevalues are defined and integrated into the life and culture of your organization and drive the way you conduct yourself in business.
