Sound bites, catch phrases and quips… Oh my.
Sometimes I describe people as 'talking in sound bites'. We all likely have catch phrases we use but if we fill our speech with quip-y expressions or buzz terms, we're likely coming across as plastic or sales-y. Often people think a clever turn of phrase makes them more articulate or sound more professional or polished. When googling the term sound bite or catch phrase most of the results you'll see are positive. They suggest HOW to use sound bites effectively...or....HOW to incorporate sound bites into interviews and media presentations. I would suggest that if you are prone to using 'corporate speak' and 'canned speech' in everyday conversation you may not be viewed as authentic. Consider this:
1. Record yourself in a conversation and play it back. Do you repeat phrases, terms or buzz words? Do you use certain expressions over and over again? Are you speaking as if the camera is on or are you genuine and real in your remarks and comments?
2. Do you spend a great deal of time crafting language? Do you listen for phrases and terms used by others and incorporate those into your vocabulary? If it doesn't come naturally to you, don't use it. Mimicking may be an effective sales ploy but it won't serve you well in real conversations with colleagues, friends and associates.
3. Ask your closest friends and family to tell you phrases they hear you say over and over. They are positioned to hear you often and that can be helpful to shine a light on any catch-phrase or buzz word tendencies.
If you find yourself resonating with this post, stop playing a part, trying to sound smart, or looking for clever ways to speak. Just simply be real. Authenticity will make your dialogue more meaningful and your words -- however everyday or simple -- will be better received.
