Every Second Counts
@castingcrowns is one of my favorite bands. I like their style and genre of music, but more than that, I appreciate their lyrics, thoughts about life, and interpretation of scripture. One of their more recent songs is "I Don't Want to Leave a Legacy." If you haven't yet given it a listen, it would be worth the 4 minute investment of time. One of the poignant lines in that song is "I'll let every second point to Him..." As a follower of Jesus this resonates. I'm not a casual follower. I don't just check "christian' on a list of religions. I'm not just an avid church-goer or 'religious.' Being a Jesus-follower for me is far more encompassing than those labels suggest. It's a lifestyle. It impacts my work, my home, my friends. It's both WHO I am and HOW I live. It's not just a set of rules to follow but a blend of doing and being. So when I sing the words I'll let every second point to Him..I'm concerned with is that true for me? Do I let every second point to Him? When reflecting on my day, can I answer how did every second point to Him...? These questions are a challenge for me to live every moment of every day doing justice to being a disciple of Jesus, being worthy of the label of Jesus-follower. I love WHO Jesus is. I love that He sees people. I love that He led a life of service. I love that He challenged the status quo and the religious establishment. He was a world-changer both in His earthly example and the spiritual impact He made and continues to make. Every second He walked on earth counted. There were no missteps or time-wasters. Yes, every second counts. Every thought, every activity, every interaction counts. How I treat people matters. How I respond matters. What I get involved with and where I spend my time matters. How I invest my time in people, causes and projects matter. It doesn't just casually matter, every second matters.
So as I continue to strive to make an impact through our work at CDP and in my personal life, and as I strive to make every second count, it boils down to this....
Did I spend my time today in ways that reflect my commitment to let every second point to Him? I tend to be a task-oriented person but this every-second-counts lifestyle can't just be about checking tasks off a list. The tasks themselves matter. So as I reflect on this day, did I plan my day well?
Did my interactions with others today reflect my commitment to let every second point to Him? More than just doing tasks, this is about being. EVERY SECOND COUNTS theology requires I keep even the most challenging interactions in check. How was my being today? Was I kind, truthful and patient?
I'm still a work in progress but I have today, and today I will work to let every second point to Him.
