I love nonprofits.

That comes as no surprise to those who have worked with me/us in any capacity. Nonprofits make a HUGE difference in the health of a community.

In sharing some information with a nonprofit board last night I was reminded of some key principles that we need to keep in front of us.

1. Create a culture of planning early on. Get in the habit of putting plans on paper and implementing only what is written down. New and small nonprofits are often fueled by passion but burn out, disorganization and confusion can catch up with you before you know it.

2.. Secure professional partners. You can't be an expert on it all but you can partner with people who are. Accountant, attorney, insurance agent and banker. They are a'plenty here on Linked-In so find those professionals who know your business/organization and can advise you well.

3. Protect yourself, your investors and the organization. These are not mutually exclusive ideas. A strong infrastructure and internal controls sprinkled with the right amount of insurance will do the trick. Make sure you have two or three eyes on everything. Develop and follow good policy and practice. Lean into your four professional partners and ask the question, "What else do we need to have in place to fully protect our organization, our donors, our board and our staff?"

Move forward well on this beautiful August day and go get 'em nonprofit professionals!
