Pivot.

It was a word we heard many times over the pandemic. Like a song that gets overplayed on the radio, some words are overplayed and lose their punch. I'm afraid that happened in 2020 to this word. But I'm a bit of a risk-taker so I'm going to be daring and use it here anyway.

I have several colleagues that are looking to pivot. They are switching roles, changing careers or just daring to do something new. Pivoting isn't for wimps. I think it's one of the bravest steps one can make in his or her professional life, but let's consider some things before we completely shift directions.

1. Weigh the pros and cons. As attractive as new beginnings can be there is usually a cost. Make the list and if the pros outweigh the cons proceed forward.

2. Employ the rule of three. Share the vision with three trusted advisers. These are people who know you and can offer informed advice about whether this is a good move or not. If the trusted few offer questions or see obstacles or challenges to your pivot, seriously hear and consider their concerns before moving forward.

3. Make a timeline. Set a timeline that is reasonable -- not too far off as to lose it's "now" factor but not too rushed. Make your exit strategy and move forward.

4. Leave emotion at the door. Don't pivot in the heat of the moment or the thrill of the possibility. If it's the right decision today, it will be the right decision tomorrow. It's great to be hopeful and excited but don't let that be the determinant of proceeding on. Make sure you are making an informed decision.

Pivoting can be fun and exciting. If this is where you are, congratulations! Move forward bravely but intentionally and best wishes to you in your next venture.
