Resource Development Part II

Resource Development is creating a strategy for how an organization will bring in resources -- cash, in-kind (services and stuff) and volunteers. No matter how impactful our mission or compelling the story, nonprofits must plan for how to bring cash into the organization. Nonprofits raise money through:

1. Donors. Relationship building with persons in your community that want to financially invest in your work is paramount to long-term sustainability. Find circles to plug into and build relationships with those who care about your community and want to support your mission.

2. Fundraisers. Having events that can raise funds should be part of every resource development strategy. Events are an excellent way to raise money but they also introduce people to your organization on the path toward long-term engagement and investment.

3. Revenue-generating activities through social enterprise should be considered. How can YOUR nonprofit do something that brings in on-going revenue?

4. Grants should be part of a resource development plan. How can you seek opportunities for public and private grantors to support the work of the nonprofit? What makes sense for your work and mission?

Resource Development is critical -- it's not everything (there are five other components that must be considered), but it can't be ignored. Get organized. Get funded.
