Do it anyway.

"No good deed goes unpunished." It's not my favorite quip but it is one that rings in my ears from time to time usually taking form in the sound of my dad's voice. This statement calls into question motive and forces us to examine the 'why's' of our good deeds. When good deeds fall short of a happy ending, I strive to remember:

✔ Good deeds will not always be acknowledged, but they will always be seen. I serve a mighty God and He is the God who sees. If my motive is to be seen by others I may be disappointed. If I am content with doing good for the One who is good, then I will always be content.

✔ Good deeds may not always turn out well. We are not promised results, success or a win from doing the right thing. Sometimes there will be disappointment, failure, sacrifice or even a high cost to pay. Do good anyway.

✔ Good deeds are virtuous. They are not just a means to an end, they are the end. Righteousness, goodness, kindness, and doing good unto others exist on the moral high ground, a path that can be lonely and tricky to navigate, but the right path all the same.

As you look at the good you do in the world, take inventory and take heart. Stand with your head held high. Be confident and of good courage. Good deeds bring rewards far greater than the mind's eye can see.
