5 generations in the workplace.
We premiered a new training last week with a diverse audience. There were about 50 people present representing a variety of ages from new high school grads to seasoned professionals with 40+ years of experience. The subject? Intergenerational Diversity: Bridging the Gap. We laughed about some differences as we made our way through the material. Do you remember when MTV played music videos? Do you know how to manipulate rabbit ears for a better signal? Did you do school on line during COVID?
Differences can be fun to think about, but they can also create some challenges in the work environment. This new training will be making its way to our CDP Nonprofit Academy, but until its available, here are two key take-aways to consider:
1️⃣ For first time in history, there are five generations in the workplace (traditionalists, babyboomers, GenX, millennials, GenZ). The dynamic of five generations in the workplace is likely to continue as Generation Alpha will replace Traditionalists over the next decade. The norms of culture during a generation's formative years, including world events and conveniences of inventions, impact the worldview of that generation. The worldview of each generation then greatly impacts the work environment.
2️⃣ The goal of leaders committed to creating diverse and inclusive work places should nurture an intergenerational work environment where coworkers cooperate across generations to work toward a common goal. Difference in attitudes toward work, leadership styles, technology, and communication show up in work spaces. If leaders can see value in the differences, the result can be a rewarding work place for everyone.
So consider your work place and space. Does intergenerational diversity get a fair nod? Oh, and welcome to the club, millennials.
