Keep Striving, Friend

I had lunch with an old friend yesterday. He is on many boards and lends his talents to so many public efforts, community causes, committees and nonprofits. He is in the midst of a stressful season and asked the proverbial question -- is any of this meaningful? Does any of this really matter? It's a question we all ask from time to time. I appreciate his honesty and his vulnerability to ask it out loud to a friend. If you find yourself asking that question, consider this:

  • If you are committed to a cause greater than yourself, your work matters.

  • If you operate with integrity, honesty and transparency and influence others to do the same, your work matters.

  • If you are the protector of public, private or donated funds and a champion of good stewardship, your work matters.

  • If you are asking questions that better an organization or hold people accountable, your work matters.

Your work matters even if it too often goes unacknowledged and unthanked. Keep striving, friend, and know you are appreciated more than you know.
