Listen. Consider. Value.
I was recently in an engaging conversation with a group of people I like and admire. We were discussing some important decisions that need to be made to drive the organization forward. As the conversation progressed and opinions were expressed the room got more and more tense. To sum it up it was the we've-never-done-it-that-way-before people vs the new-and-improved-way-of-doing-business folk. Have you been in that dynamic? I suppose it's always been a thing -- the new way of thinking vs the old way of thinking but somehow these days the chasm of difference between these two schools of thought seems more pronounced. Here are some thoughts to consider:
*Let's not throw out the old just because it's how it's been done. There's value in the tried and true and the history of what has worked. Traditional doesn't necessarily mean outdated. Folks who bring institutional knowledge or wisdom gained from experience may have perspective you do not have. Listen. Consider. Value.
*Let's not dismiss new ideas because it 'ain't been done that way before.' Perhaps there is value to a new way of working or completing tasks. Perhaps fresh perspectives and new approaches can benefit our organization. All ideas were new at some point so perhaps this next new idea will become tomorrow's best practice. Don't be so quick to dismiss the new. Listen. Consider. Value.
It's important to have different perspectives around the table. The voices at the table should be heard, understood, respected and considered. Make sure your organization champions this kind of diversity of thought and make sure whichever side of the argument you find yourself on, that you are disciplined enough to listen and consider the value different perspectives bring.
