Who is in your circle of three?

The circle of three is the concept of having advisors, mentors, confidantes and truth-tellers in your ear. They get access to your thoughts, fears, ambitions, plans and visions more than others. There is trust and accountability in your circle of three. They will tell you how it is and support you through the hard seasons. The circle of three may be professional or personal or perhaps both. As I challenge you to find your circle of three, here are some things to consider:

  1. Identify people who are a step ahead of you down the path on which you trod. Find individuals with wisdom, insight and perspective that you value. Identify mentors who can help you make quality decisions as you encounter life's challenges and detours. Include in your circle persons who have navigated their own path with integrity and purpose.

    2. Find a circle of three whose values align with yours**. Your circle of confidantes should share your common worldview and hold similar beliefs on key issues. Seek persons who share your perspective on foundational core elements of purpose and life's meaning.

** Seek to have meaningful relationships with others who challenge your thoughts, perspectives and beliefs. These relationships are valuable to your growth and development, but are different than those in your circle of three.

    3. Identify people who value true relationship not transactional exchanges. Your circle dwellers should be committed to you and you to them. Your circle is not built on what's-in-it-for-me. These are not strategic alliances to make more money or garner more influence. The circle of three is built on finding true value in iron sharpening iron, and the greater goal of helping you become the person you are purposed to be.

We are not meant to do life alone. We need cheerleaders and truth tellers. We need people we trust to help us through life's journeys of ups and downs. Identify your circle of three and begin to experience the richness and fullness those relationships can bring.
