Get the Degree

Get the degree. I am the first to say that college degrees are not required for meaningful careers. There are plenty of trades, earned certificates and learn-on-the-job stories from plenty of professionals on LinkedIn. You do NOT need a degree from a university to be successful in your career or in life.

I got a great education at Anderson University. I did the stop-and-go on my post-college educational pursuits. I quit after my first semester at Asbury Theological Seminary. My selected field of study just wasn't for me. I entered the workforce and forged my career path. LSU Shreveport in my 40's was the ticket for me. It had the tri-fecta I was hoping for: educational excellence, convenience (for the working professional) and reasonably priced.

As I sit in meetings, read blogs and posts, and watch my share of educational videos and TedTalks, I am concerned that we've lost our hold on scholastics and real learning. I wonder to what extent we have replaced truth with opinion without even realizing it. Even in reading my favorite genre of book which is non-fiction (nerd alert), I find myself having to be careful that I'm not just reading unfounded opinions wrapped in an impressive book cover.

I value formal education. It isn't everything, but it is valuable. I think scholastics still demands substantive arguments and facts that support assertions. There is still a standard of excellence found in our universities that is becoming more and more precious to me as opinions without substance grow in popularity. So if you've ever wanted to get the degree, I say go for it. It may or may not help your career path and it may or may not get you higher pay. It will add to your arsenal of thought in meaningful ways.

There are plenty of on-line reasonably priced and excellent options at your disposal. Follow me to LSU Shreveport or check out Miami University Regionals. It's never too late and always the time to get that degree.
