What's in a year?
A year is a common measurement for our experience. Perhaps you've been at this five years or fifteen or twenty or forty. Experience is important; arguably, even more important than education or other credentialing. But all experience isn't equal. Consider this:
What have you learned over the years? What has experience taught you? When you think back to your day one and where you are now, what do you know now that you didn't know then? Experience CAN be a great #teacher but it requires us to be a #student and seek to learn, grow and get better.
Have you mastered your craft? #Longevity doesn't always mean #mastery. Have you learned what there is to know about your field of study or industry? Are you an #expert in your work or are you still an #apprentice after 20 years?
Have you allowed experience to #stagnate you? Has experience become your excuse to stop learning, growing and bettering yourself? Are you doing the same thing, the same way you've always done it? Perhaps there are some tried and true methodologies to cling to, but have you considered what else, what's next, and what can be improved?
How do you broaden your experience? What do others know that you don't? Who can you learn from in your trade, your field and your organization? What can you learn from those with less experience and those with more?
As we continue to add the years onto our resume, let's strive to learn, grow and develop our knowledge base and our skill set with fervor and intention. Let experience be the great #teacher she can be.
